NZ Climate Overview

Four Seasons in One Day

New Zealand is an island nation with a largely temperate climate. The North Island goes from subtropical in the far north to temperate in the south. The South Island is cooler, with alpine conditions in the mountains.

The weather is notoriously changeable. It's common to experience bright sunshine, heavy rain, and strong winds all in the same afternoon. The key to enjoying NZ is preparation: wear layers and always carry a raincoat, even in summer.

Temperature Ranges

  • Summer (Dec-Feb): 20°C - 30°C (68°F - 86°F). Sunny and warm.
  • Autumn (Mar-May): 15°C - 25°C (59°F - 77°F). Stable and settled.
  • Winter (Jun-Aug): 10°C - 15°C (50°F - 59°F). North is mild/wet, South is cold/dry with snow.
  • Spring (Sep-Nov): 15°C - 20°C (59°F - 68°F). Fresh, blossoming, "lambs in fields" weather.
  • The Sun: The sun in NZ is MUCH stronger than elsewhere due to a thinner ozone layer. Burn time can be 10 minutes.

⚠️ CRITICAL: The New Zealand Sun

Don't Get Burned!

This is the most important travel tip for NZ. The UV radiation is extreme here, up to 40% stronger than North America or Europe at the same latitude.

Rules of the Sun

  • Burn Time: In summer, you can burn in 10 minutes.
  • Sunscreen: Use SPF50+. Reapply every 2 hours.
  • Cover Up: Wear a hat and sunglasses.
  • Temperature Trap: It might only feel like 20°C (68°F) due to a cool breeze, but the UV index can still be extreme (11+). Don't be fooled by cool air.
  • Peak Hours: Seek shade between 10 AM and 4 PM.
