Sperm Whale Fluke in Kaikoura

Welcome to Kaikoura

The Marine Capital of New Zealand

Kaikōura is a coastal town on the South Island of New Zealand, famous for its abundant marine life and spectacular scenery. What makes this place unique is the Kaikoura Canyon β€” a deep underwater trench that comes close to the shore. This creates a nutrient-rich environment that attracts Giant Sperm Whales, which reside here year-round.

The name "Kaikoura" comes from the Maori words kai (food) and koura (crayfish). True to its name, it is one of the best places in the world to eat fresh crayfish (rock lobster), often sold from roadside caravans right next to the seal colonies.

πŸ›₯️ Option 1: The Boat

Operator: Whale Watch Kaikoura (the only boat operator)

Pros:
  • You get very close to the whales (within regulation limits).
  • Feeling the "breath" and sound of the whale is impactful.
  • Great opportunity to see dolphins and albatross alongside the boat.
  • Modern catamarans with education videos and toilets.
Cons:
  • Seasickness: This is real. Even if you don't usually get sick, take medication beforehand. The boat often stops and rocks while waiting for whales to surface.
  • You only see the bit of the whale above water (back and tail).
  • Tours can be cancelled frequently due to swell.

πŸ’‘ Our Expert Recommendation

Choose the Boat if: You want the most immersive experience, you want to see Albatross too, and budget is a factor. Tip: Book the earliest morning tour (7am or 10am) for the calmest seas.

Choose the Plane/Heli if: You suffer from motion sickness, you are short on time, or you want to appreciate the sheer scale of the whale from above. Seeing a whale from a helicopter is a bucket-list experience.

More Than Just Whales

🌊 Swim with Dolphins

Kaikoura is famous for its Dusky Dolphins, which are incredibly acrobatic and occur in pods of hundreds. You can watch from a boat or put on a wetsuit and jump in the freezing water to swim with them. It is widely considered one of the best dolphin encounters in the world.

🦭 Seal Colony (Point Kean)

At the end of the Kaikoura Peninsula, you can walk right up to the car park at Point Kean and see New Zealand Fur Seals lazily lying on the rocks (and sometimes the footpath!). Warning: Keep 10m distance. They are wild animals and can move surprisingly fast.

🦞 Eat Crayfish (Kou-ra)

You can't visit Kaikoura without trying the local delicacy. The most famous spot is the Kaikoura Seafood BBQ, a roadside shack near the seal colony. It's nothing fancy, but the crayfish, scallops, and whitebait fritters are world-class.

🚢 Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway

If you have 2-3 hours, this walk is spectacular. It takes you along the clifftops with views of the ocean on one side and the Seaward Kaikoura Ranges on the other. You can often see seals and sometimes whales from the track.
